Prison for dangerous driver after Plumpton Road incident

An Albanvale man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after the car he was driving hit another vehicle head-on and seriously injured its two occupants in 2012.

The 28-year-old was charged with negligently causing serious injury and was sentenced at the County Court on Friday, June 13. The incident, which occurred on June 30, 2012 on Plumpton Road, Plumpton, took place after the offender was seen driving at speeds in excess of 120km/h.

During the court proceedings a witness stated the driver drove at high speed along Taylors Road and as he approached the intersection of Tarletons Road drove into the grass alongside the road and then moved into oncoming traffic and hit a Toyota van head-on.

As a result of the impact, the van was run off the road and rolled onto the passenger’s side.

The 24-year-old female driver suffered injuries including a fractured nose, broken collarbone, broken ankle, and ruptured knee ligaments, all requiring surgery and extensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said the victim was trapped upside down by her seatbelt, was bleeding profusely from the

mouth and not breathing before a nurse, who was one of the first peope on the scene, cleared her airways.

The victim remained in the vehicle until emergency services arrived and freed her.

When sentencing the offender the magistrate took into account his previous poor driving history, which included losing his licence on at least four occasions for excessive speed.
