Marvellous, Melton
Melton’s women’s hockey team sent out a warning to its opponents with a 7-1 win over Swinburne in the Vic League Premier 2 division on Saturday, cementing Melton’s spot in third place. The women’s Vic League Premier 2 reserve side also had a win, Swinburne forfeiting. In Vic League Premier 3, the men’s side went down 4-3 to Swinburne, a result which leaves the Mustangs sixth on the table. The men’s Vic League Premier 3 reserves had more luck, beating Swinburne 5-0.
Jets hang on
The Western Jets held off a fast-finishing Eastern Ranges to win their TAC Cup clash 13.7 (85) to 12.9 (81). After an even first quarter, the Jets kicked away to lead by 23 points at three-quarter time. Ranges kicked four goals to one in the final term but fell just short. Brandon Coletta kicked four for the Jets, with Billy Myers and Connor Menadue best on ground. The win kept the Jets third on the ladder. They have a bye this week.
Payne a winner
Bacchus Marsh’s Brenton Payne kicked three goals in Vic Metro’s win against South Australia in the 2014 AFL U18 championships on Saturday. Vic Metro led for most of the game and looked to have the match won when Payne kicked his third goal at the start of the final term. Despite South Australia kicking three of the last four goals, Metro won,
13.8 (86) to 10.12 (72). Joining Payne among the best were Western Jets teammates Dillon Vlojo-Rainbow, with 21 disposals and eight marks, and Corey Ellis with 13 disposals.
Centrals fall behind
Melton Centrals were held goalless in their 55-point loss to Montmorency in the Victorian Women’s Football League division 3/4 on Sunday. The Centrals had chances to kick a major but could manage only nine behinds in the 9.10 (64) to 0.9 (9) loss. Centrals face Port Melbourne this week.
Tigers fall just short
Werribee Tigers lost by one point to Essendon in the VFL on Sunday. In a seesawing match, the Tigers trailed by eight points at three-quarter time after looking to have taken control of the match late in the second quarter. The last term went goal for goal, with the siren sounding seconds after Werribee had brought the margin back to the game-winning one point. The final score was 14.14 (98) to 15.7 (97). Taylor Hine was adjudged best player for the Tigers.
