Parkinsons support group reaches out

There are plenty of people who could benefit from the Parkinson’s Support Group at Melton, but it has only about 10 regular members and wants more.

The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month, inviting guest speakers to talk about the many issues that affect people living with Parkinson’s Disease, and those caring for them.

Group secretary Evelyn Meijer, who has family members affected by the disease, said people really appreciated hearing about the experiences of others in the same situation.

“They really enjoy coming to the meetings because they’re able to talk to people with similar problems,” Ms Meijer said.

“And they also get information from health specialists.”

At next Tuesday’s meeting, the group will hear from a Djerriwarrh Health Services counsellor, before members head out to lunch.

And at the September meeting, Ms Meijer says a representative from Carers Victoria will speak. She says members are particularly looking forward to this event next month.

“If some of the people are lacking self-confidence, there are plenty of us there to get their confidence back up. But there are a lot more people who could come, and many who could benefit from the support group.”

The group meets at 10.30am at the Melton Community Health, corner of Yuille and High streets.
