CHFL: Slow start leads to end of Bungaree’s run

Bungaree was handed its first loss of the Central Highlands Football League season on Saturday, going down to Buninyong by seven points.

The Demons were left to rue a slow start after managing just one point in the first quarter at Buninyong football ground.

The Bombers took full advantage and booted three goals to establish a 20-point lead.

Despite Bungaree’s best efforts, reeling in the margin proved a tough task.

The Demons won two of the next three quarters, but it wasn’t enough as Buninyong held on for the 10.9 (69) to 9.8 (62) win.

Nicholas Weightman worked hard for Bungaree on what was a tough day for his side and was named among the best players.

Weightman was well supported on the forward line by Jason Brown, who booted three goals.

The upset result wasn’t enough to knock Bungaree off the top of the ladder, with the Demons still two points clear of Waubra.

In other round 13 results, Ballan returned to the winners’ list with a 96-point thrashing of Newlyn.

Ballan was led by a forward line double act as Zachary Peoples kicked 10 goals, while Ryan Closter booted six.

It wasn’t just the Newlyn backmen who struggled, though, with the Cats’ forwards unable to hit the scoreboard after quarter time.

After kicking five goals in the first term, the Cats managed just two for the rest of the match, losing 21.17 (143) to 7.5 (47).

Ballan remains in ninth place on the ladder after the win.

The Blues will look to make it back-to-back wins this week when they take on 13th-placed Clunes.

In other results, Creswick defeated Dunnstown 8.12 (60) to 1.3 (9) and Gordon got over Learmonth 16.7 (103) to 10.11 (71). Waubra thrashed Skipton 20.18 (138) to 4.8 (32) to move within half a game of the Demons.
