Melton’s disabled get to make it ‘appen

Melton boasts some of the most accessible venues and events in Victoria, according to an award-winning phone app.

Data released by disability and aged service provider Villa Maria ranks Melton eighth-highest in the number of accessible venues and events listed on its award-winning Out & About app.

Almost 1500 accessible venues are listed on the free app, which is designed to help people with disabilities and mobility limitations and their families plan a day out.

Melbourne’s CBD tops the list with 92 venues, followed by St Kilda with 39 and Werribee with 29. Melton is equal eighth with 14.

Venues are deemed accessible if they include wheelchair-accessible toilets, ramps, hearing loops, accessible parking, handrails or flat walking tracks.

The types of venue listed are restaurants and cafes, parks and playgrounds, community and leisure centres, libraries and tourist attractions.

Events with accessibility features are also listed, including concerts, sporting events, exhibitions and festivals.

Villa Maria’s executive manager of marketing, Rebecca Ryan, said because the app was community-powered, users could suggest venues for inclusion.

Ms Ryan urged all Victorians to get behind the app and make life easier for everyone.

“We take it for granted we can make a snap decision to visit a café or go for a walk in a park,” she said. “For people with disabilities or mobility limitations it’s not so easy.

“The Out & About app gives everyone access to the same information.”
