Melton Netball Association’s urgent call for junior players

Youngsters are being urged to give netball a go in a bid to save the Melton Netball Association’s junior competition.

Committee member Janet Govett says the competition has reached crisis point and might not survive if numbers continue to decline.

She says the NetSetGo program, introducing children from 6-10 to the game, is thriving. But after that, players have nowhere to go.

“We’ve been struggling the last couple of years, especially for 10-15 year olds,” she told Star Weekly.

The junior competition is for players 18 and under.

Ms Govett says the competition needs at least four or five teams to be able to continue.

“I’m devastated. I’ve been in netball for a very long time and we were so strong at one point.

“It’s a bit sad, really, and we’ve done letterbox drops and other things to get families involved.”

Ms Govett attributes the lack of registrations in the junior ranks to rival football and netball competitions that are held on the same day as the Melton competition.

“We can’t compete with that, but ours is a great competition that offers a lot of benefits to youngsters,” she says.
