RDFL: Smiles for Diggers as Smailes kicks seven

A bag of seven goals from Luke Smailes helped Diggers Rest to a smashing 139-point win over Kilmore in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.

The Burras were outstanding, booting 10 goals in the opening term to lead by 67 at the first break.

There was no way back from there for struggling Kilmore, which could muster just five goals for the afternoon.

For Diggers Rest, Smailes was joined on the multiple goal scorers’ list by Brandon Kilty, who finished with five, while Jason Williams kicked three.

The 25.23 (173) to 5.4 (34) win is the ninth of the year for the Burras.

Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims was rapt with his side’s all-round effort.

“That was probably our best start to a game for the year,” he said.

“The things that make us a competitive team, we did really well in the first quarter and pretty much for the whole game, which was a pleasing aspect.

“We had a talk before the game about bringing others into the game and giving blokes in a better position a chance to get goals, and I think we did that really well.

“The guys shared the ball a lot and I think we were pretty unpredictable.”

Diggers Rest has a bye this week before launching into the final month of footy before finals.

The fourth-placed Burras will take on unbeaten Romsey in a blockbuster round 15 match at Romsey Park on July 26.

“They [Romsey] are a well-coached and well-drilled team that plays a really good brand of football,” Sims said.

“We just need to try to take it up to them on their home deck, which is a great challenge for our guys.”

Elsewhere in the RDFL, Rockbank’s hopes of playing finals were dealt a blow when the Rams went down 7.13 (55) to 7.10 (52) against Lancefield.

Rockbank is now sixth on the ladder and will meet second-placed Riddell this week.
