RDNL: Melton Centrals will have to make grand final the hard way

Melton Centrals missed out on a direct path into the Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final after going down to Riddell by seven goals on Saturday.

The Centrals fell behind early in the contest and gave up a two goal lead at quarter time.

From there Riddell showed its class and was able to extend or maintain its lead across the next three terms.

The 47-40 win is the third time Riddell has beaten Melton this season.

Centrals’ coach Randy Pereira was disappointed his side wasn’t able to capitalise on its chances.

“All credit to Riddell,” he said.

“They have beaten us three times this year. We were obviously keen to beat them this time around but we made it tough for ourselves.

“We missed about 14 shots which is uncharacteristic for us.”

While it may have been an off day for the Centrals in goals, Melton was well led by Jessica May who was named her side’s best player.

It was also May’s first match for three weeks after being out injured.

Melton will now take on the winner of today’s semi-final between Rupertswood and Romsey.

The winner of that match will then square off against Riddell in the grand final.

Pereira is confident his team has what it takes to get back on the winners’ list.

“At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who we play, we just need to get out there next week and make sure we get everything right,” he said.

“I was happy with the general play there were just a few things here and there. If we improve about 10 per cent then we probably win the game.

“Sometimes we just need to pick the right option rather than trying to force it.”
