Melton helpers hampered by food shortage

A Melton couple renowned for helping people in need are calling on the community to dig deep and join their cause.

John and Lynda Southall have been making and donating Christmas hampers to Melton residents since 2012, although they’re now low on goods and have to reach into their own cupboards to help out others.

“We didn’t know if we could keep the food up . . . there just aren’t enough donations,” Mr Southall told Star Weekly.

But thanks to Melton’s unwavering community spirit, there will be food at Christmas time for those who need it most.

Mr Southall said that after telling others about their plight, the couple now had a trailer full of donations and were hoping for more.

There will be a raffle at Christmas time to win the goods, with the money raised going towards buying more food.

“If we get a call in the middle of the night, Lynda will go to our cupboards,” Mr Southall said. “We need as much help as possible.”
