Callum Wilson showed why he could be a wildcard this Riddell District Football League season with a best-on-ground performance for Diggers Rest on Saturday.
The former West Coast Eagles forward booted six goals in the win against Lancefield.
Wilson has kicked 10 goals in three games since signing with Diggers Rest.
But he wasn’t the only one to send the ball between the big sticks in the Burras’ 23.17 (155) to 8.6 (54) win.
Ten players kicked a goal, with five booting at least two.
Burras’ coach Shaun Sims was rapt with his forward line’s performance.
“We started well,” Sims said.
“They [Lancefield] have got some fairly solid midfielders, so I thought if we could compete in there and win enough ball we would probably win.
“Having Callum play like that helped. He kicked 6.9. It was great to have multiple goalkickers.
“It just lightens the load and the pressure on some of the key forwards.
‘‘We’re just trying to figure out what our best mix down there is at the moment.” Diggers Rest’s backline was also impressive, giving up just eight goals.
The Burras remain fourth on the RDFL ladder with a 10-4 record.
They take on the ninth-placed Melton Centrals and second-placed Rupertswood before the finals.
Despite his side being guaranteed a finals berth, Sims said there was plenty of room for improvement.
“We’re trying to work on getting our organisation around the ball down pat. It’s something we have been concentrating on,’’ Sims said.
‘‘We tend to rotate a lot of guys through the midfield, which can make it hard, but we need everyone to follow the structure we’ve set up. We’re continually trying to work on that.”
Elsewhere in round 16, Rockbank defeated Broadford by 47 points.
There was no stopping the Rams, who kicked 11 goals to one in the first half on their way to a 16.19 (115) to 10.8 (68) win.
