Melton can add “home to a culinary prodigy” to its list of accolades after local boy Brent Owens was last week crowned MasterChef winner for 2014.
Owens went from bobcat driver to fine-dining chef in a matter of months but admits his passion for cuisine began many years ago.
“I’d drive a bobcat during the day then come home at night and watch the LifeStyle food channel and that’s where it all started,” Brent told Star Weekly.
“Since I was 21 my obsession has evolved, but it was my girlfriend who pushed me into applying for MasterChef.”
The 24-year-old is now $250,000 richer, has a cookbook publishing deal on the way, is the owner of a new car and has the opportunity to gain work experience in some of Australia’s top kitchens.
But he remains humble despite his great success.
“I really do have to pinch myself . . . every few hours I sit back and realise I’m living my dream,’ he said.
“I live and breathe cooking, but I’m glad to be back at home for now.”
Owens hopes to open a cafe and supply tasty and nutritious ready-made meals to the public, saying there’s a huge gap in the market for people who have specific dietary requirements.
And he encouraged other people to make the most of their hidden talents.
“You never know what sweet treats life has to offer. It’s not just about cooking, it’s everything,” he said. “[My win] goes to show you everyone can try to live out their dream.
“What’s the worst thing that could happen? Just give it a go.”
