Melton, roll up your sleeves

Melton’s locals are being invited to roll up their sleeves and give blood as Lifeblood hosts a blood donation popup in Melton this month.

The popup is currently at Melton’s Community Hall and runs through to Friday 13 February.

Lifeblood spokesperson Aania Tandon encouraged locals to book in now if they are feeling healthy and well.

“A blood donation is a selfless gift that can not only save lives but can improve the quality of lives and give people more precious time with their loved ones,” she said.

“Just over three per cent of people in Australia donate blood regularly, however it’s estimated up to 57 per cent of the adult population are eligible to donate, which is an extra 10 million people who could roll up their sleeves.”

Ms Tandon said there are many people who can benefit from your blood donation.

“Cancer patients are the most frequent recipients of blood and plasma products, but donations also go to women giving birth, people with blood disorders, trauma victims and many more,” she said.

Ms Tandon said the blood donation appointment takes only one hour, with the donation itself only lasting up to 10 minutes.

“It’s very important donors have had enough to eat and drink the day before and day of their donation,” she said.

“When you are well hydrated, your blood volume is higher which leads to a smoother donation, and it helps your body recover quickly.”
