The fire danger period will begin in Moorabool later this month, with locals urged to remove flammable materials from their properties and complete private burn-offs while they are still permitted.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has announced that the fire danger period will begin on 24 November.
Once the fire danger period is place, a written permit will be needed to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation.
Lighting fires in the open during the fire danger period can result in a penalty of more than $21,800 and/or 12 months’ imprisonment, the CFA said.
The CFA is urging locals to use the time leading into the fire danger period to prepare their properties.
District 15 acting assistant chief fire officer David Harris said there were large fuel loads in the area due to recent rainfall.
“There is concern about the dryness within forested and bushland areas,” he said.
“There is lots of high grass which will dry quickly and provide lots of fuel for running fires.
“We’re asking residents to clean up around their homes, remove flammable materials, and ensure any private burn-offs are completed safely and responsibly before restrictions come into effect.”
He warned that despite some areas still appearing green, the underlying soil is significantly drier than in previous years, increasing the likelihood of fast-moving grassfires.
Those conducting burn-offs must apply for a permit and notify authorities online via www.firepermits.vic.gov.au, or by calling 1800 668 511.
