State agencies combine to combat chronic diseases

Australia’s four state-based prevention agencies, including VicHealth, have formalised a new forum to better tackle the shared drivers of chronic diseases which are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia.

The newly established Prevention Agency Chief Executive Forum brings together the chief executives of VicHealth, Health and Wellbeing Queensland, Healthway (WA), and Preventive Health SA — dedicated state agencies committed to improving public health outcomes.

The new forum held its first meeting on Monday, August 18 on the eve of the Federal Economic Reform Roundtable in Canberra.

Chronic diseases have a significant impact on Australia’s health and productivity, with excess weight estimated to have cost Australia $40 billion in 2019 and projected to cost almost $235 billion annually by 2060.

“The cost of preventable chronic disease is widespread,” said VicHealth chief executive Professor Anna Peeters AM.

“It is costing our economy billions and putting pressure on front line workers, families and communities across the country.”

It’s hoped that by focusing on the prevention of chronic diseases, the forum will not only help people stay active, engaged and more able to contribute to work and community life, but also deliver long-term benefits to the economy.

The forum will meet regularly to collaborate on national preventive health priorities and share lessons.

It will also explore opportunities for joint advocacy, research and program initiatives, and will be supported by a Prevention Agencies Senior Officers Group.
