Brian Dixon honoured with state funeral

A state funeral will be held for long-time state politician Brian Dixon at 10.30am on Friday, July 25 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne.

Mr Dixon served as the Liberal member for St Kilda in the legislative assembly from 1964 to 1982 and held several key ministerial roles.

His portfolios included minister for youth, sport and recreation, social welfare, housing, and employment and training.

Among his most notable parliamentary contributions were advocating for healthy living and exercise, as well as playing a key role in making Victoria the first jurisdiction in the world to mandate seat belts.

Mr Dixon also had a distinguished sporting career, playing 252 games for the Melbourne Football Club between 1954-1968 and winning five premierships.

He died on July 9.

The state funeral service will be open to the public, and for those who are unable to attend, the service will be live streamed.

At the request of the Dixon family, donations may be made to FightMND at fightmnd.org.au/donate.

Further details about how to attend or view the live stream will be shared in due course, with the most up to date information available at vic.gov.au/BrianDixon.
