Perfect Lions romp to title win

Deer Park is the first club in Western Region Football League division 1 history to land the premiership by winning every match of the season. The Lions are the kings of the jungle for the second year running after their star-studded line-up obliterated Spotswood by 77 points in a desperately lopsided grand final at Chirnside Park in Werribee on Saturday. Kwame McHarg was at his brilliant best with seven goals for the Lions and was joined on Deer Park’s best-players list by Chris Stewart, Shylo Smith, Heath Ayres, Shaun Harrison and Jackson Barling.

Lakes farewell ‘best coach’

Essendon District Football League side Taylors Lakes kicked off its search for a new senior coach last week. The Lions are hunting a replacement for Steve Burns, who stood down at the end of the season. Burns took over the top job at the Lions in 2009 and didn’t have to wait long to achieve the ultimate success. In 2010 he coached the club to the division 2 premiership and earned a jump up to premier division. After being relegated back to division 2 a year later, the Lions have played finals the past three years. Taylors Lakes president Peter Gavos said Burns was the best coach the club had had. “Steve has really raised the bar and we need to maintain that high level of coaching,” he said. “He’s been magnificent for the club and I’d say he has been the best coach to come through TLFC. He’s been unbelievable in his service to the club. He has the respect of everyone, is a great person on and off the ground, and we wish him all the best in future.”
