RDFL grand final: Romsey premiers after beating Diggers Rest

Romsey capped off the perfect season with the Riddell District Football League premiership on Sunday.

The undisputed best side all season, the Redbacks proved yet again while they have been the team to beat with an 18-point win over Diggers Rest 9.17 (71) to 7.11 (53).

Unlike many of their victories for the year, the Redbacks were made to work for it.

It was the Burras who made the early running and the early lead.

They did what many teams could do and that was keep the Redbacks goal less in the opening quarter.

For the Burras though they weren’t able to make the most of it and only lead by nine points at quarter time.

The second quarter saw the Burras continue to press and make it hard for the Redbacks to score.

When the Redbacks could get past the Burras defence, the shots were from angles and under pressure and with that came inaccurate kicking.

The Redbacks had seven behinds on the board before a free kick saw the Redbacks get their first major.

One goal was quickly followed by a second and third and the Redbacks took the lead.

The Burras then had their turn off being inaccurate and they trailed at half time, 26-20.

It was the first 10 minutes of the second half which changed the game.

The Redbacks got the first goal of the quarter and looked to be getting their running game going.

A holding the ball decision saw the Redbacks get a second and the margin jumped out to 20 points, the biggest at that point of the game.

But like good teams, the Burras didn’t go away.

They kicked the next two goals and looked like it could have been a couple more as they controlled the play.

Unable to convert on the scoreboard, they were made to pay when the Redbacks took the ball down and got a goal of their own.

At three quarter time it was a catchable margin of 19 points.

In the huddle Sims implored his players to take risks as they looked to make up the difference.

It was the Redbacks who fired the first shot of the final term with the first two goals to get the margin out to 30 points.

The Burras got two quick goals through Callum Wilson to give them some hope.

The Redbacks though controlled the play and didn’t allow the Burras to get within striking distance and won by 18 points.

Ayden Tessari was awarded best on ground.

“I just expect it from him,” said Redbacks coach Dean Helmers. “He is a beauty he can play small or tall and can run all day.”
