Michael Johnstone is an icon both on the field and in the community.
Mr Johnstone has been a part of sporting clubs across Melbourne’s western suburbs as a cricketer and as Hillside Football Club’s founding president.
He was also a part of Western Colts, Sunshine United, East Coburg and Sydenham-Hillside, and a VFA footballer at Sunshine.
With his achievements and experience on the field, the Melton council is considering naming a component of the Hillside Recreation Reserve Sporting facilities in his honour.
Cr Lara Carli detailed messages from the life members of Hillside Football Club about Mr Johnstone.
“Michael was the driving force in establishing the Sydenham-Hillside Football Club,” the letter stated.
“This was a mission for Michael driven by providing children, regardless of football talent, the opportunity to participate and gain the experience and life skills the team sport provides.
The letter also highlighted the club’s achievements gained through Mr Johnstone’s leadership and advocacy.
Cr Kathy Majdlik said sports clubs are very important in the community, but there always needs to be a driving force, and Michael Johnstone has become that force.
The Melton Council will also be in discussion with the Johnstone family, Hillside Sharks Football Club and Sydenham Hillside Cricket Club about this proposal.
