Godzilla is coming to Melbourne but, thankfully, he will not be here to destroy the city.

Instead, a four-day festival held at ACMI will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the iconic Japanese monster that has captivated our imagination for decades.

From October 31 to November 3, GodzillaFest will unleash a line-up of free and ticketed activities, including films, talks, trivia, video games, and an after-hours Halloween bash.

ACMI director Seb Chan said the celebration aimed to trace the character’s footprint across pop culture and give insight to fans.

“Godzilla is one of the most recognisable screen icons of the 20th century, appearing in 38 films and countless comic books, TV shows, videogames and advertisements spawning the kaiju genre,” Mr Chan said.

“ACMI’s celebration of the undisputed King of Monsters gives fans, old and new, a fun look into Godzilla’s enduring legacy on filmmaking, and our social and cultural imagination.”

ACMI Cinemas will screen five key films from the franchise, including the original 1954 film and recent Godzilla vs Kong (2021).
