Improved public transport is at the top of Melton council’s wishlist ahead of the state government’s budget announcement next month.
Victoria’s fiscal priorities for the next financial year will be outlined on May 7, with all councils across the state providing submissions beforehand.
With the region growing so quickly, Melton has put its case forward for improved train and bus networks.
This includes new stations at Mt Atkinson, Thornhill Park and Calder Park Drive in a bid to ease traffic congestion and reconfiguration of the bus network.
If realised, these efforts would complement the major redevelopment works at Melton Station, where four level crossings are set to be removed and additional two train lines constructed.
Council has also reiterated the need for funding toward the new Melton Hospital and the creation of a new TAFE facility in Cobblebank.
Melton council mayor Kathy Majdlik said these were necessary measures to accommodate the region’s growth.
“Council has advocated to the state government to fund the city’s top priorities so that delivery of health services, schools, roads and public transport aligns with growth projections and improves liveability for residents,” she said.
“We look forward to the construction of the Melton Hospital and the Melton TAFE.”
“The Western Highway upgrade remains a key priority for us, and we look forward to the business case laying the foundation for future investment.”
Council has also indicated its hope for continued support on projects on the boil.
This includes the Plumpton Aquatic and Leisure Center, which consul has already acquired land in order to create, but is still waiting on further funding.
In January council indicated it had applied for funding within the state government’s Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution Funding program.
Ms Madjlik said the continued support of the Cobblebank Community Services Hub was also a priority.
