More than 207 traffic offences were detected in Melton and Moorabool as part of a police operation that was in place across the January 26 long weekend.

Of the 6,728 offences detected state-wide on the four days, about a third of them were for speeding, with 58 speeding offences were detected in Melton and 49 in Moorabool.

There were 27 unlicensed or disqualified driver offences in Melton and Moorabool and 502 across the state.

Victoria Police Road Policing Acting Assistant Commissioner Justin Goldsmith said it was frustrating to see a number of disqualified and unlicensed drivers on the roads.

“Whilst it’s great that ANPR technology is helping police to detect and remove more unauthorised drivers than ever before,” he said.

“Unauthorised drivers have no right to be on the road, yet they continue to flout the rules, putting their lives and others at risk.

“Rest assured, our enhanced capability means that we are stopping these drivers in their tracks and removing them from our roads, making it safer for all road users.”

Police caught eight drug drivers and seven drink drivers across Melton and Moorabool during the operation.

State-wide there were 225 drink drivers and 198 drug drivers, with 117,703 alcohol and drug tests conducted across the state.
