Twins join Western United

It’s double trouble for Western United with twins Adriana and Melissa Taranto joining the club’s first A-League Women’s side.

The 23-year-olds, who play for Calder United in the National Premier League, are the first siblings to sign for Western United.

It is a return to the top flight competition for the pair, who both debuted for Melbourne Victory in 2015 as 16-year-olds while also representing Australia at youth level.

“It means so much, not only individually but to sign on together is amazing,” Adriana said.

“We’ve played in the same team since I can remember, so to play at the highest level in Australia – we just can’t wait.”

Melissa added, “we’ve been wanting to push to get into the A-League again, so for the opportunity to join a Club like Western United who has done so much with its men’s team, and with the partner club at Calder, it’s something we’re super excited for.”

The pair have both been part of Western United’s development program. They told Star Weekly earlier this year they were hoping to get another opportunity at the top level.

“They [Western United] started a partnership with Calder,” Melissa said. “The development girls are from all over the NPL and have come together in a more professional environment.

“You get to feel what it’s like to be part of an A-League club. We have some really good coaches and they fit us out in uniforms as well.”

A-League Women’s coach Mark Torcaso is eager to see the pair return to the top flight after impressing in the NPLW Victoria for Calder. Torcaso coaches the pair at Calder United as well.

“Mel and Adriana have been standout players in NPLW for some time, and it’s really overdue that they have another opportunity at professional level,” he said.

“They have both grown and developed so much and are more than ready for this chance, I’m honoured to be able to give them both that opportunity.

“They’re tenacious, willing to work and learn and will both be great for the group in the inaugural season.”

The midfielders attention for now is on the end of the NPLW season and winning another title with Calder United.

Having already won the Nike F.C Cup, Calder United was sitting atop of the NPLW ladder with two rounds remaining.

The pair are the second and third Calder United players to join with Western United, with Alana Cerne named as the club’s first signing.
