A new modern art exhibition coming to Melton next month will combine mental health and football to focus on the concept of gender roles.

Anima Animus is an exhibition from local artist Julie Zapasa that will be on show at the CS Gallery in Caroline Springs from August 9 to November 27.

Zapasa’s artworks are influenced by Jungian psychology, in order to mix masculine and feminine and express the concept of gender in diverse ways.

In combination with this, her works put a creative spin on the symbols and colours of Australian Football League teams that the community know and love.

The exhibition uses football as a metaphor for the battles our mind can endure through patriarchal conditioning.

Zapasa originally hails from the United Kingdom but currently resides in Melton, where she works from her home studio.

Through her art, she is an advocate for improving mental health and gender equity.

She has previously had solo exhibitions with the City of Brimbank, Albert St Gallery in Brunswick, Victoria Park Centre for the Arts in Western Australia, Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery in Fremantle and more.

The official exhibition opening event will be held on August 27 at CS Gallery, with tickets available on Trybooking.
