Bowls Victoria: Four soar for Melton in pennant

Saturday was a day to remember on the greens for Melton in Bowls Victoria’s metropolitan pennant competition.

The club’s four sides all had good wins to continue a hot start to the new season.

In division 1, Melton was too good for Lalor, winning a deceptively close match 18-82 to 0-76.

Club secretary John Adams said it was a fantastic performance.

“We played Lalor out at Lalor and we had all rinks up, but we only won by six shots,” he said.

“It was a very tight game, but we were able to get the maximum points, which puts us on top of the ladder.”

Melton’s division 2 side thrashed Hoppers Crossing.

The two sides played off in last year’s grand final and on that occasion it was Melton that came up short.

There was no sign of a repeat this time around, with the home side securing a 60-shot win.

“Playing at home on our greens really helps the side,” Adams said.

“We lost a few players in the off-season but were able to bring a few younger ones in and they have all gelled really well.

“They have really compatible rinks … I think that’s one of the main things that helped them play so well.”

Melton’s division 4 side defeated Altona North, while the club’s division 6 group was too good for Keilor.

After a number of player changes in the off-season, Adams is confident that all the club’s teams still have a lot of scope for improvement.

“At the start of the season we were just hoping we could win our home games and the odd away game, and hopefully stay in
division 1,” he said.

“That would allow our new players to settle in and create some good companionship at the club. We really wanted to be set up for next season.

“We hope our best is yet to come.

“We’ve settled in well and hopefully we can keep it up.”
