Bacchus Marsh Scouts celebrate boost

A $3000 grant awarded to the Bacchus Marsh Scouts group will be used to help create a harmonious multicultural community, says group leader Dougal Mayor.

The Scout Association of Australia Victorian Branch was last week awarded the grant as part of the Australia Post 2014 Our Neighbourhood Workforce Nominated Grants program.

Mr Mayor said the grant was integral to funding more activity in the expanding culturally and linguistically diverse community (CALD) of Bacchus Marsh and Melton.

“This community grant will be used to enable Scouts in Bacchus Marsh to develop cultural and language-specific activities targeted
at the local CALD community to engage members of many nationalities,” Mr Mayor said.

The Bacchus Marsh Scouts group has 70 youth members aged six to 25, with different age groups focusing on activities such as caring and sharing with the community, becoming an active member in the community, and developing leadership skills.

“The importance of Scouts in the community is that it provides holistic education to young people,” Mr Mayor said. “It’s academic, it’s emotional, intellectual and physical.”

Australia Post invited its workforce to nominate community groups and charitable organisations that mean something to them and which reflected the Our Neighbourhood aspiration of helping build healthier, more vibrant and inclusive communities across Australia.

Local Australia Post employee Glenn Smith helped secure the grant for the Bacchus Marsh Scouts.
