Melton soccer lovers are in for a treat as a new multipurpose soccer pavilion at MacPherson park was officially opened this week.
The new pavilion is part of the MacPherson Park Recreation Reserve redevelopment designed to support local sporting clubs, improve community physical and mental wellbeing and connect residents.
The new pavilion was a $3.3 million project funded by the City of Melton and the state government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus program.
City of Melton mayor Goran Kesic said the importance of these types of community facilities should not be underestimated.
They help create social connections and social cohesion, giving people a sense of belonging and purpose,” he said.
“These new facilities replace the existing pavilion, which was no longer fit for purpose, and comprise female friendly change rooms, a kitchen, umpires’ rooms, community social space, first aid and public amenities,
“It was Melton City Council’s objective to achieve a gender equitable, proud, safe and all-inclusive community facility and I am confident that we have accomplished this.”
Melton Phoenix Soccer Club president Michelle Williamson said the addition of the gender-inclusive and accessible facilities has seen improvements in club participation and match attendance.
“Since [the upgrades] got announced, it’s increased our female participation already,
“About thirty per cent of our junior team are now girls,” Ms Williamson said.
She said the addition of accessible parking, toilets and a ramp to the pavilion have also allowed more community members to come and watch the matches.
“It’s a really good vibe around there, it’s giving people a better experience,” Ms Williamson said.
“We’re really grateful to have a beautiful facility, once it’s all completed it’ll be like a whole new place, it’s amazing,”
The next phase of the Macpherson Park Reserve redevelopment will be the construction of car park and pedestrian links.
