A group of teachers from Coburn Primary School are taking on a walking challenge this week to raise funds for people on the autism spectrum.

Walk for autism is a national annual fundraising event run by Autism Spectrum Australia and encourages participants to raise awareness by walking ten thousand steps daily between March 27 and April 3.

Coburn Primary School teacher Caitie Scott said the cause was close to the group’s hearts as some of their students are on the autism spectrum.

“We know how important it is to raise awareness and how much benefit will come from raising the money, we know what an impact it can make,” Ms Scott said.

The five teachers plan to spend recess and lunch increasing their step count and already have students joining in too.

“It’s really good at lunchtime and snack time, we wear our T-Shirts and we go for a walk around the oval, the kids come and join us and they see what we’re doing,” she said.

Walk for autism aims to support people on the autism spectrum by providing opportunities for them to better participate and engage with their communities.

Ms Scott said that walking ten thousand steps a day was a small way to contribute to a big worthwhile cause.

“It’s just nice to raise awareness and show that we’re all in it together, the ten thousand steps is the minimum of what we could do to help, we just want to make a difference,” she said.
