The 2022 duck hunting season will kick off on March 16, with changes to bag limits and conditions announced.

On February 26, The Game Management Authority, who is responsible for establishing the parameters of the season, shared its finalised arrangements for the season.

From March 16 to June 13, the bag limit for hunters will be four birds per day across six species.

This number is reduced from the 2021 season when the limit was set at five game per day.

“The arrangements for the 2022 duck season are based on analysis and modelling of habitat and waterbird abundance surveys conducted across eastern Australia, and other data relating to game duck abundance, habitat distribution and climate,” The Game Management Authority statement read.

According to the Game Management Authority’s research, the Blue-winged Shoveler and the Hardhead are not to be hunted this season as both populations of both species are currently in decline.

The Game Management Authority recommends that all hunters leave a hunting plan with a responsible family member or friend with information about your plans in case of emergency.
