Residents in Melton and Moorabool can expect hot weather continuing into Tuesday, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasting a low intensity heat-wave for the state.

For each part of the country, BOM compares the maximum and minimum temperatures for each three-day period in the coming week to what would be considered hot for that location using previous data.

BOM said heat kills more Australians than any natural disaster and has released the following tips to help residents stay cool:

* Drink plenty of water throughout the day

* Never leave anyone in a car – the temperature can double in minutes

* Stay somewhere cool – spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings

* Plan ahead – Only do essential activities and go during the coolest part of the day

* Check in on others – look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, older people, young children, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.
