Melton will be flying the transgender flag at half-mast today in honour of transgender people who have lost their lives in acts of transgender violence.

November 20 marks transgender day of remembrance and was started in 1999 by advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.

The day ends a week of transgender awareness to help raise visibility for transgender people and address issues the community faces.
