Melton residents are being encouraged to don bright orange clothes later this month as a part of a campaign to end gender-based violence.
Melton council will be taking part in the international 16 days of activism against gender based violence campaign, which aims to end violence against women and girls around the world.
Council is encouraging residents to wear orange clothes, the colour associated with violence against women, and participate in activities during the campaign.
There will be an array of events during the 16 days, starting on November 25, which support the elimination of violence against women in the community.
Mayor Goran Kesic said the campaign is a reminder for the community that we all have a role to play in showing that inequality and violence is not OK.
“I’d encourage everyone to take a look at the events we’ve planned and join us for a walk with neighbours, or listen in to one of the inspiring talks, and help create a respectful and supportive culture for all people in our city,” he said.
The 16 Days of Activism events include:
• Melton Walks Against Family Violence;
• Chat with author of ‘South Sudanese Manhood and Family Crisis in the Diaspora’, Akuch Kuol Anyieth;
• #mykidsiadwhat? How to be a parenting influencer superstar with Nelly;
• Thomas Talk with Asylum Seeker Resource Centre volunteer and Human Rights Advocate, Akuol Garang;
• Family Violence: Navigating the Legal System;
• City of Melton Women in Sport Breakfast; and
• Respectful Relationships and COVID Connections
