A key stretch of Taylors Road in Fraser Rise will be upgraded to provide better lighting and safety.
Following a notice of motion by councillor Steve Abboushi in February, council officers reviewed of street lighting along the Taylors Road corridor, considering both interim and permanent arrangements.
A road safety audit and public lighting assessment of Taylors Road was undertaken, with a report presented to the recent council meeting highlighting interim or permanent options for better lighting along the road.
“The road safety audit identified two intersections and the consideration for lighting improvements, comprising of an upgrade of the existing lamps,” the report stated.
“This, together with a range of other improvements including linemarking, signage and delineation works, have been scheduled to occur over the coming months.”
A public lighting assessment conducted by Traffics Works in August identified an ‘interim’ option featuring nine new lighting poles between Plumpton Road and City Vista Court, costing about $150,000, or an ‘ultimate’ option with 45 new lighting poles, costing about $900,000.
Taylors Road is a major local road running east-west runs from Leakes Road in the west to Sunshine Avenue in the east, where it then continues as Green Gully Road.
The area reviewed for the report was the stretch of road between Plumpton Road and City Vista Court.
The review found despite the increasing traffic on the road, Taylors Road does not currently provide formalised kerb, channel, footpaths, or underground drainage.
Street lighting has been provided where the road is formalised with footpaths, pedestrian facilities, traffic islands and key intersections , but the remaining sections of Taylors Road is considered rural in nature and no street lighting is provided.
“The road is currently experiencing change from its historic use as a rural road to its current and future function as a major road within the municipality,” the report found.
The ‘Taylors Road Corridor Study’ includes planned signalised intersection upgrades at the intersections of City Vista Court, Sinclair’s Road and Plumpton Road, all due to be completed by June 2023, including street lighting.
