Spoonville brings joy

In a year of staying apart, Parkwood Green Primary School has found a novel way to bring their community together.

Following on from a global trend, the school has created their own ‘Spoonville’ in front of their main building, helping their pupilsfind a creative outlet and also bring some much-needed joy to a tough year.

Originating in the UK, Spoonville involves creating characters on a spoon to display. Variations have been popping up all over the world.

School principal Keir Jasper said it had been great to see the pupils come together on the project.

“We saw some schools in other areas doing it, so a few weeks ago the art teachers decided it was something we could do,” Mr Jasper said.

“With most of our students studying remotely at the moment, we were able to get them to create their characters at home, and the students really ran with it.

“It’s been amazing to see the students really embrace the concept, and it will be great to have our Spoonville out the front to welcome us when we get back next term.”

Along with the Spoonville, the school also held Wacky Wellbeing Wednesday last week, with pupils encouraged to wear mismatched outfits for the day and take part in activities to support their wellbeing.

“It’s a bit of an acknowledgement that this year has been quite difficult, and sometimes you need to stop and look after your own wellbeing,” Mr Jasper said.

“The community has been amazing, and the kids have engaged really well with their learning under tough circumstances this year.”
