A new “state-of-the-art” sports pavilion is coming to Diggers Rest.
The state government recently committed $2.5 million towards building a new facility at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve that includes a two-storey sports pavilion.
The funding, as part of the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, will also help Melton council replace three “old and outdated” buildings at the site, create female-friendly change rooms, provide extra facilities for women and girls’ sport and a space for community events.
The funding boost is expected to fast track the development of the project’s masterplan.
Melton mayor Cr Lara Carli said the facility would make an important difference to the local community.
“This pavilion will be the central activity hub for the whole Diggers Rest community,” Cr Carli said.
“It will give residents greater opportunities to connect with each other, stay active, and participate in hobby groups, school groups and more.
“A modern, multipurpose pavilion will make a meaningful difference to the people who call Diggers Rest home and we’re grateful that the state government has partnered with us on this outstanding project.
“In addition, the pavilion will serve a fast-growing population in Diggers Rest which is set to increase 35 per cent by 2026.
“Importantly, its construction will also generate much-needed jobs.”
Local Government Minister Shaun Leane said since the Growing Suburbs Fund’s establishment in 2015, $275 million has been made available for 221 community projects.
“The new Diggers Rest pavilion is a really worthwhile project and I am pleased the Growing Suburbs Fund has been able to support it,” he said.
“Sport facilities are important centres for growing communities.
“The Growing Suburbs Fund has built a legacy of investment in our fastest-growing communities – creating jobs and delivering the facilities communities need to thrive.
“This is going to be more crucial than ever as we recover from the impact of coronavirus.”
