Melton council is calling for nominations for its annual community achievement awards.

The awards are presented each year to residents who make valuable contributions to the local community or who dedicate their time to making life better for others, and have recognised many worthy winners over the years.

The awards cover five categories, including citizen of the year, young citizen of the year (under 25), intercultural engagement leader of the year, access and inclusion leader of the year, and gender equity leader of the year.

Melton mayor Lara Carli encouraged people to nominate someone worthy of recognition.

“Whether it’s someone who encourages community participation, breaks down barriers or readily helps others, nominating them is a really special way to say thank you,” Cr Carli said.

“It could be a volunteer at your local club, or someone who goes above and beyond in their daily work.

“Over the years, these awards have celebrated teachers, community leaders, sportspeople, and more.

“Last year, we recognised individuals who had challenged gender stereotypes for young people, advocated against bullying, dedicated their time to the CFA, worked on disability inclusion in sport, and promoted intercultural awareness to students.

“This year, it could be that person who you think makes a fantastic contribution to your community, and to our city.”

The winners will be announced at an awards night later in the year. Nominations close at 5pm on July 31.
