North Western Titans finally break drought with big win

North Western Titans celebrated victory for the first time in the Baseball Victoria Summer league division 3 west competition.

Having shown improvement the past season and a half, the Titans finally broke through on Saturday for their first win, beating the Geelong Baycats White.

Making the win more special was the way they did it, smashing the Baycats 21-14.

Titans president Danny Haymes said it was exciting to see the hard work the team had put in result in a win.

“They played well and they dominated,” he said

“The scoreline didn’t reflect the game. We were up 21-7 going into the last inning.

We decided to give some of the other girls a chance in different spots, as we knew that we had already won.

“They played well. We knew it was coming and it showed what they can do.”

Haymes said there were a few celebration drinks after the win, which means so much to the playing group.

He said the pleasing thing was the way they went about it.

“It was a real team effort,” he said.

“Tess [Warner] had a great game at the plate and a lot of the girls had multiple hits. Kim [Borg] pitched for three innings and conceded seven runs.

“They hit the ball well and ran well. They got a double play. They took the opportunities when they came.

“It was more a team effort than anything.”

With one win on the board, Haymes said the confidence would continue to grow.

He said the players kept working hard at training to put themselves in positions to win games.

“They are training hard and people from other clubs want to come play with us,” he said.

“They are improving a lot and a lot are playing in the men’s second side and are doing alright.

“They are understanding the game a lot more.”

Meanwhile, the Titans’ men’s side suffered a ninth innings loss to the Chelsea Dolphins on Sunday. The Titans led 9-8 heading into the ninth innings, before Chelsea scored two runs to steal the win 10-9. Cameron Wilson was the standout with the bat for the Titans including hitting a home run.
