Diggers Rest ready for women’s team

Diggers Rest will field a women’s football side next year.

With a growing demand for more female football teams, the Burras are putting in the work to get a team up and running. Burras president Ben Morse said it had always been the plan to get a women’s team started.

“There’s been a youth girls under-18 team and some of them are coming up,” he said. “The junior club has done a great job in getting it up and running.

“The basis of the plan all the way along was to then have a women’s team.

“We’ve been working on it for a while.”

Morse said there had been a brilliant reaction from across the community to the club wanting to expand.

He said while they were still looking for more players, they looked like they would have enough to field a side.

“I think we’re close to having the numbers we need,” he said.

“A few netballers have expressed interest and coming across and playing footy.

“We’ve got a strong netball program, so we don’t think it will impact that too much.”

Morse said they were in the process of looking for a coach and would look to appoint a female football co-ordinator down the track.

Plenty of people had put their hand up to help get the team started and the club’s major sponsor, AVID Property Group, is also on board and providing support.

Diggers Rest will hold an information night in October. For more details: diggersrestfnc@gmail.com
