A brush with the arts for Melton Willows

Creative Melton Willows residents will be showcasing their talent and innovative artworks at a Melton pop-up studio until next Tuesday.

The studio, aimed at introducing residents to “art-making, building new skills and techniques”, is a collaboration between Arts Access Victoria and Melton Willows supported residential services.

Arts Access Victoria executive director Veronica Pardo said such studios were essential to getting people immersed in their local communities.

“Over time, they [residents] might go to an arts exhibition or they might have a discussion about art with other people in their communities.”

Residents work with professional arts practitioners and have their artworks professionally framed.

As part of the studio projects, work is done to extend participants’ “skills, engagement and, potentially, their employability”.

“We treat the participants as emerging artists, so it’s important for them to be taught by skilled people,” Ms Pardo said.

Melton Willows supported residential services offer accommodation to men and women who live with mental health issues, disabilities, brain injuries or drug and alcohol dependencies.

The Melton Willows pop-up studio will be open from 9am-5pm every day until Tuesday, November 11, at the Melton visitor information centre, 323 High Street, Melton.

For more details about the project contact Aliey Ball on 8640 6009 or aball@artsaccess.com.au.
