Bacchus Marsh falls just shy against Gisborne

It was a case of deja vu for Bacchus Marsh in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition.

The Cobras were knocked out in an elimination final last year by Gisborne by three points and were keen to atone for that exit when the two teams faced off at the weekend.

However, like last season, a late Cobras comeback fell short and the Bulldogs went on to win 6.2 (38)-5.4 (34).

Bacchus Marsh football manager Rod Bertram said they thought they might have done enough to get some revenge for last year.

He said it was a good game of football from both sides.

“We were in front late and the weather wasn’t great,” he said. “It was pouring rain when we got the score equal.

“We kicked a goal clear [but] they were able to string a couple of goals together and stole the win from us.

“They pinched it in the last couple of minutes.”

Skipper Abbey Bertram was a standout in game 100, while Jessica Baker and Kellie Mckay kicked two goals each.

Rod Bertram said it was a really good team performance.

He said the playing group was proud of its efforts this season.

“It’s been a really good year, better than expected. With how many players we lost and the number of new players we had, we probably thought it was a bit of a rebuild this year.

“It worked out really well.”
