Banking on the kids

Shoppers in Ballan could not miss a special visitor last month, and it was all for a special cause.

A giant piggy bank, stretching three metres in height and weighing in at 700 kilograms, rolled into town on July 26, taking up residence out the front of the Commonwealth Bank as part of the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal.

The piggy bank is making its way across Victoria with the aim of raising $1 million for children with life-threatening conditions.

The local bank helped the fundraising efforts by selling cute piggy merchandise and encouraging the community to support local families in need.

The Knight family from Ballarat has been using Very Special Kids services for more than a year now, to help support their 10-year-old son Noah, who suffers from a neurological genetic disorder.

“Now that he’s getting older Very Special Kids gives him some independence,” says Noah’s mother, Virginia.

“It’s a good way for him to make friends and get out of the house”,.

Very Special Kids supports more than 900 families across Victoria, who are caring for children with life-threatening conditions.

The organisation provides 24-hour nursing care at Victoria’s only children’s hospice, as well as professional support services for their families.
