A champion teacher Christine Nunn

Diggers Rest Primary School teacher Christine Nunn was the one with show and tell last week – not her prep pupils.

The talented squash player returned to the classroom with three medals after competing in three championship events at the Gold Coast.

Nunn won gold in the World Doubles Championships women’s pairs, silver in the mixed doubles at the same event and then claimed silver in the women’s singles at the Australian National Championships.

Nunn said it had been an exciting few weeks.

“I played at the Commonwealth Games last year, but I’ve never won a medal of this nature,” she said.

“My [doubles] partner won gold at the Commonwealth Games last year and has a high singles ranking.

“We’ve played together before and know each other, that helps in terms of direction on the court. [Winning] it was a big surprise and I was very happy about it.”

A grad teacher, Nunn said she had taken a step back from squash as she concentrated on her career and believes that may have played a role in her recent success.

“I had no expectations,” she said. “I’m not able to travel as much now. If I get the chance to play big tournaments at home, I’ll put my hand up.”

Nunn said her pupils had been pretty excited by the news she had won gold.

“I arrived home at 10.30pm on the Sunday and was back at work on Monday,” she said.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind.

“The kids have loved tracking my success.”
