Inspector Kathy Rudkins has achieved a lot in her 35 years in policing. Last week the former Melton area commander was recognised in the Queens Birthday Honours.
Inspector Rudkins was awarded the Australian Police Medal for her work across many years on the force,.
She said she was pleased to be acknowledged with such a prestigious award.
“I was very proud when I heard about it,” she said.
“I feel like somebody’s recognised the work that I’ve done, and not many people get this award so it’s a real privilege to receive it.
“It’s a team effort though, and this is recognition not just for myself but all the officers I’ve worked with and the good work we’ve done together.”
The commendation for the award said Inspector Rudkins had demonstrated strong leadership in the community, and was a person of high integrity within Victoria Police.
Inspector Rudkins has held many roles during her career, but said she had very fond memories of her time in Melton.
She was the Melton Area Commander from 2015 until earlier this year, when she moved to the Police Standards Committee.
“I always wanted to help people, which is why I got into policing,” she said.
“I’m very proud of the work we did with the African community in Melton, and the work we did in partnership with the council and local community groups.
“It’s always challenging when you’re working with victims of crime, because you can’t change anything. But overall I loved my time in Melton, no two days were the same.”
