Tullmarine joy over first win

Tullamarine celebrated on Saturday after its women’s side won its first ever match.

After being disappointed the previous week not to win against Essendon Doutta Stars in Essendon District Football League Women’s division 1, the players weren’t going to make the same mistake against Aberfeldie 2.

The Demons scored the only two goals of the first half and were able to keep that lead heading into the last quarter.

The Demons made the most of Aberfeldie’s injury woes to run the game out well for a 5.6 (36)-10 (6) scoreline.

Demons coach Anthony Montrose said they were thrilled.

“It was great after last week, when we were in it until the last quarter, “ he said.

“It’s huge excitement.

“We really rallied this week and were able to put it all together to get a win – and a good one as well.”

Montrose said that after running out of legs in round one, they had made some changes to be able to run out the game better.

He said those changes had worked and the girls had stuck to the structure they had put in place at the start of the season.

Natasha Ziegelaar kicked two goals for the Demons and is proving to be an excitement machine for the side with her run and carry.

She was named in the best along with Samantha White, Emily Angelidis and Tricia Devine.

Montrose said it was pleasing to see some of the girls new to football having an impact.

“They’ve actually stepped up … there’s the core group that holds us together and then there’s the next tier that steps up and gives that excitement,” he said.

Montrose said the first couple of weeks had shown that they will be a competitive side this season.

In other results, Roxburgh Park got its second win of the season, beating Avondale Heights 8.10 (58)-1.2 (8).

Greenvale lost to Keilor Park 13.15 (93)-2.0 (12).

In premier division, Westmeadows beat Hillside 10.14 (74)-0.5 (5), while Craigieburn got its first win by beating Pascoe Vale, 9.5 (59)-7.3 (45).
