Lions pick young gun

Students from Bacchus Marsh schools set a “brilliant” example for their peers at the recent Youth of the Year awards.

The awards, run by Lions Club Bacchus Marsh, are conducted annually to select an outstanding youth ambassador to represent the Moorabool region for the year.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s Rachel Jackson won the Lions Youth of the Year earlier this month.

Youth of the Year co-ordinator Len Murfitt said that the calibre of this year’s entrants was “exceptional”.

“They were absolutely brilliant,” Mr Murfitt said.

“From the media image of what kids are like today and what we have seen in person – it’s like chalk and cheese.

“These young people set a wonderful example for others and by the end of the day they’re confident in speaking to a crowd of people … and they do their schools proud.”

Six VCE students, three from Bacchus Marsh Grammar and three from Bacchus Marsh Secondary College, were judged on leadership skills, community involvement, academic prowess, general knowledge, personality and public speaking skills.

“Rachel Jackson was a standout among the students that participated,” Mr Murfitt said.
