Diggers Rest Primary School is the latest target of vandals after two other children’s centres were also struck over the summer break.
Two external buildings of the primary school were covered in graffiti and the words “void”, “filth” and “fat” were tagged on its walls.
Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks, of the Melton criminal investigation unit, said the graffiti was quite extensive.
“This type of behaviour is not only a nuisance but has financial implications for the schools and community,” Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said. “I wish I knew how to stop vandals from targeting schools.
“We will prosecute anyone caught committing acts of vandalism .”
Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said a proactive policing unit patrolled the area and visited the school to offer security advice, among other things.
“There is generally a spike in offences, such as criminal damage and burglary, at schools during holiday periods,” Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said.
“However, this holiday season has not seen a steep increase. It’s pleasing that there have been relatively few offences committed on schools.”
Police believe the incident occurred between January 7 and 12.
Diggers Rest Primary School principal Rachelle Hedger said it was sad and disappointing that this had happened to the school.
“We are committed to ensuring that if vandalism occurs, it is cleared up very quickly, ensuring it has no impact on our children and families,” Ms Hedger said.
“We are very proud of the way the community works together to look after our school and our grounds.”
A kindergarten on Exford Road, Melton South, and childcare centre on James Cook Drive were also targeted between January 18 and 20. Vandals sprayed graffiti and damaged children’s play equipment.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks encouraged the community to contact police if they see activity at schools outside opening hours.
Police also want to hear from anyone who knows the taggers or has any information about the incidents.
