Rockbank Primary School pupils are hoping to see a boxes of birds outside their window someday soon.

Pupils painted five nesting boxes for birds in bright colours as part of the Birds of a Feather project, run by Djerriwarrh Health Services and Melton Environment Group, teaching kids about conservation of local wildlife.

The five nest boxes, crafted by Ballan’s Stan Bell, were designed to attract owlet-nightjars and rosellas to nest.

Melton Environment Group president Daryl Akers said the boxes would not only be habitat for wildlife – but community art.

“They were told to decorate them according to their own imaginations,” Mr Akers said.

“The project will give the school children a sense of pride and ownership in their own local natural environment.

“The decorated boxes are tributes to the children who painted them.

“Nest boxes brightly painted in this manner may be unique to Melton.”

The nesting boxes will be placed around Arnolds Creek along with other nest boxes already installed.
