Melton Thoroughbreds look to raise awareness

Melton Thoroughbreds’ Big V games this week just aren’t about getting results, but also raising awareness of youth homelessness and family violence.

As the issue grows in the Melton area, the Melton Basketball Association has decided to step up and do what they can to help.

Melton secretary Donna Richter said many players had been unaware youth homelessness was an issue in Melton.

She said the players were happy to be involved in raising awareness.

“I had a meeting with one of the Melton councilors Melissa De Santis,” Richter said

“We were talking about a few things and she highlighted about youth homelessness in Melton. It blew us away.

“Our Big V coaches decided that it would be good to showcase the issue at one of our home games, and help raise awareness.”

A game between local business people and possibly police will be held before the youth league and men’s games on Saturday.

Richter said information about local welfare services would be available throughout the day.

Money raised will go to a local charity. There will be a raffle and a gold coin donation at the door.

The youth league men’s side plays at 6pm, followed by the senior men.

More information will be found on Melton Thoroughbreds’ Big V Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/meltonbigv/
