Up for the challenge

You’ve got to be made of some pretty tough stuff to take on the ChallengeMD charity ride.

Registrations opened last week for the four-day marathon charity ride through the Victorian Goldfields, which will raise money for research and spreading the word about Muscular Dystrophy Australia.

The ride, in September, will take the riders through mountain landscapes as well as famous towns in the Goldfields region, will depart MDA headquarters in North Melbourne before travelling more than 450 kilometres.

MDA executive director Boris Struk said that ChallengeMD, now in its 12th year, pushed participants to their limits.

“The challenge is that most cyclists are novice,” Mr Struk said. “Most share the heartbreak of having a relative or friend affected by MD or have MD themselves … they find the strength to go on reminding themselves who they are doing this for.

“For some, it drives them to the basics, not taking for granted the luxury of movement and the luxury of being able to push their bodies to their utter limits.”

A team of about 30 riders will depart from North Melbourne on Thursday, September 27, and travel through North Melbourne, Rowsley, Maldon, Heathcote, Greenvale and Kilmore before heading back to North Melbourne.
