Man dies in Burnside house fire

A man has died in a Burnside house fire on Saturday.

The 37-year-old, who lived at the Strickland Crescent house, died at the scene.

CFA and MFB firefighters were called to a blaze at a single-storey brick home just before noon.

A large amount of smoke was billowing from the house, mainly from the rear.

Police Detective Senior Sergeant Justin Watkins said firefighters discovered the man already deceased in the house.

Three other occupants of the house were taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.

It took about half an hour to bring the fire under control.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the cause of the blaze was yet to be determined.

Police and CFA are investigating.

Meanwhile, a Melton West woman’s plea for help has been answered by the community after her family’s home was gutted by fire in the early hours of last Wednesday morning.

Cursty Shields said her mother’s West Melton Drive house, in which her two siblings and three young nephews also lived, had been destroyed.

A crowdfunding campaign to help the family rebuild has raised almost $1000 in four
days.

“The whole house is gone, they have lost everything,” Ms Shields posted on
Facebook.

“Standing there while the firefighters try to put it out and watching how broken my family was is heartbreaking.

“This ordeal has been so horrible, especially on my nephew. He has been fretting for his dinosaur toys, which unfortunately he lost.

“It’s going to be very hard to explain to him that the one place he calls home is no longer there.”

The CFA said no one was harmed in the
fire.
