Fire tool a game changer

A new board game will teach young people and their families about bushfires.

The Fire Game will soon be launched at Moorabool schools and aims to educate, promote fire awareness, preparations and what to do in an emergency.

The Scotsburn leadership group, including a dozen local volunteers and Moorabool council members, has been putting the finishing touches on the game that asks players, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” in response to different scenarios.

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell congratulated the group on the concept and development of the game and its unique artwork.

“The card photographs of the local area, pre and post fire are something that will be remembered by all who play this board game,” Cr Tatchell said.

He said educating primary school students in the district and across the state about fire preparedness will benefit many people, as children will share details of the game with their parents, family and friends.

Leadership group member Carol Bond said the game had “local meaning” because it was developed by local people.

“It is empowering for young people and their families to develop resilience in preparing for bushfires and emergencies,” Ms Bond said.

“As a group, we tapped into each other’s strengths and learnt more about the community.”
